Sir George Clausen Brown Eyes (1891)

Brown Eyes 1891 by Sir George Clausen 1852-1944

I discovered this glorious picture of the  ‘brown eyed girl’ while having a quick browse of The Tate Website.  I was completely captivated by it and being fortunate enough to work fairly close to Tate Britain was able to make a lunch time dash to the Gallery to see it . Despite the irresistable pull of her liquid brown eyes and glowing complexion enhanced by the gentle summer light I found her gaze slightly unsettling.    Who or what is she looking at.  What has happened to give her such a serious look. Is she unhappy,  regretful, wistful? I walked away from this picture wanting to know her story.
