5 on Friday: 5 Books To Be Excited about in 2015

penguin books 2

These 5 books are all by favourite authors of mine and they are all due to be published in 2015.  I for one can’t wait to read them.

  1. A History of Loneliness by John Boyne (3rd Feb)

John Boyne’s latest novel is the story of an Irish priest who has endured recent, founded outcries against the church. The book examines the dark and troubled history of the Catholic Church.  This is described  as Boyne’s most powerful novel yet.  I found The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas incredibly meaningful so I’m excited by whats to come with this book.

2.  A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler (10th Feb)

I have never not enjoyed anything by Anne Tyler.  This promises to be a delicious family drama as told by an ageing Aby Whitshank who with her husband will soon need the care of their children and grandchildren.  I’m sure this will be full of sharp observation and the kind story telling that is right up my street.

3.  A Place Called Winter by Patrick Gale (26th March)

I love Patrick Gales story telling abilities and his settings.  His latest takes place  in the Canadian prairies, at the turn of the century.  This is a story of self-discovery, loosely based on a real life family mystery. The promise of epic, intimate human drama, both brutal and breathtaking awaits.

4.  The Unloved by Deborah Levy (3rd March)

Deborah Levy’s last novel, ‘Swimming Home’ which I hugely enjoyed and reviewed here , was about a dysfunctional family’s odd exploits while on summer holidays.  ‘The Unloved’ also features a cast of international tourists celebrating the holidays together in a French Chateau.  Much to look forward to.

5. A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman (June )

I adored ‘When God Was a Rabbit’ and have hoped since reading it that Sarah Winman would write something else.  Her latest is set in the wilds of Cornwall in the aftermath of the Second World War.  It depicts  the friendship between an old woman at the end of her life and a young soldier who sees little reason to continue with his.  This could be a book for my summer hols.

I can already hear my book shelves groaning under the burgeoning weight of further books being added this year.
