Book Group Love

I’m always a little bit excited during the first few days of October.  Excited in October, but WHY I hear you cry? October is that potentially dull month when summer has officially ended, Christmas is still distant, and the days are getting shorter and colder.  What can there possibly be to get excited about  in October?

Well dear readers, for me and the other 10 members of my postal book group, October is the month when our collaborative but geographically spread reading begins.  For those of you who have been loyally reading my musings here for some time now (thank you, thank you) you may recall me talking about my book group here about this time last year.

We are a happy band of 11 women living in various parts of the UK.  Some of us know each other although many of us don’t, but we are linked by our love of  reading.  We each choose one book a year we want to share with the rest of the group. From 1st October onwards I await the welcome thud of a jiffy bag landing on my door mat.  This announces the arrival of this months book and an accompanying notebook in which to write my thoughts on it.  My chosen book will have reached its destination and I hope the recipient is already enjoying it.  I will keep my choice a secret as I know that some of the group read these pages and one of the many joys of our book group is the surprise of not knowing what each month will bring.

Books have the power to unite and divide opinion.  In our group our books unite a group of women who may never meet each other but who  all love reading and want to share that love with one another.  It positive and its life affirming and that is one of the many reasons I love it.  So heres to another year of great book group reading choices.
