One of the things I love to do is listen to writers and authors talk about writing and books. Living in London I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity almost any day of any given week to find an author speaking at an event somewhere in the city. And in recent years I have been to a number of events. From evening talks in book shops, libraries and historic buildings to festivals in Hampstead, and a particular favourite last year Kew Gardens.
However, there is an abundance of literary festivals all over the UK these days. I have selected 5 which all take place in places you might just be visiting as part of your summer holiday staycation.
- The Althorp Literary Festival at the Althorp estate in Northamptonshire 30th June – 3rd July. “A unique celebration of the written word that takes place against the backdrop of one of England’s most beautiful, private historic houses”
- Port Eliot Festival in Cornwall 28th – 31st July “a glorious mixture of big names and more than its fair share of surprises”
- Buxton Festival in Derbyshire 8th – 24th July “a happy marriage of opera, music and books”
- Raworths Harrogate Literary Festival 2nd to 5th July “featuring a diverse programme from the worlds of politics, economics, science, music and literature”
- Henley Literary Festival 26th September – 2nd October “one of the UK’s most popular literary festivals, bringing together punters and pundits from far and wide in an annual meeting-of-minds set across its stunning riverside hometown”
What better way to fill a few summer days than surrounding your self with books, and people talking about books.
