Well, it does feel like spring has almost sprung. The days are longer, the air is warmer and daffodils are popping up everywhere. I don’t know about you but nothing says spring to me like a daffodil. These bright yellow, perky trumpets rarely cost much more than £1 a bunch and are the best way to inject a bit of spring into any room! This week it was International Women’s Day. This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
So with that in mind, the weekend wander this weekend is focusing on women!
The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction Long List
The long list was announced this week. I haven’t read any of those that have made the long list but there are a couple on there I have been aware of for a while. Why not visit the website where you can read about every book and decide which you might want to read or even give to another woman in your life.
Have you heard of Shine Theory? I hadn’t until very recently. Shine theory is based on the premise of “I don’t shine if you don’t shine.” The implication being that women should support each other rather than compete for recognition, praise and career advancement. It has particularly resonated with women in the US, and Shine Theory is regularly talked about by US podcast hosts Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow in their popular show Call Your Girlfriend
Although the theory is particularly based on the workplace relationships, I think we should extend it to all relationships we have with other women, wherever we are. We have all witnessed women being ‘bitchy’ about one another or even been one of those women ourselves. Why do we do this, as women we need to support and encourage one another. This weekend, I shall be wandering off to the Alps for some spring time skiing. I suspect there may not be many daffodils but there will be lots of snowy mountains which are equally beautiful!
