After a week of searingly cold temperatures which are never good for those of us whose preferred mode of commuting is by bike, it suddenly got warmer. The weekend just past brought with it almost blue skies, glimpses of sunshine and an abundance of spring flowers. It also brought joy and a small glimmer of hope. On Saturday I hung my washing out. Such a small thing, but its the first time this year. The sight of freshly laundered snowy white sheets billowing in the wind brought me a rather surprising sense of domestic calm and achievement!
With some extra time away from work this week; my husband was given a ‘recharge day’ ( how sensible). I too had a day off and we were able to enjoy a longer walk than is the norm. We ambled along The Thames path between Hammersmith and Kew, enjoying different sights and sounds and diverting off into streets we don’t often visit. Takeaway coffee and a delicious cinnamon and orange morning bun sustained us very well. Its the little and the unexpected which bring so much joy.
It has already been a long winter hasn’t it, and signs of spring feel even more important this year. I am certainly linking spring with a much longed for relaxation of lockdown rules. On my walks and runs this week the sightings of purple crocuses and flowering pastel pink Camelia’s has signified real hope. In my last Moments of Calm Post I mentioned snowdrops in our local cemetery along side the promise of yet to bloom crocuses. Well, the crocuses have now bloomed and the sea of blue they are exhibiting has become a feature of our neighbourhood, with people diverting on their daily walks just to see them.
Wishing you all a gentle final week of February…… xx
Lovely read, thank you. I, too, love nothing more than hanging out my laundry – strangely meditative as the birds sing all around and you settle into this gentle domestic task. The crocuses are out now with us too up here in the High Peak. Daffs soon to come. Snowdrops still trying to decide! What a strange year.
Thank you for your appreciation of quiet London. I can’t wait to be free to wander through and appreciate its amazing diversity again.
