Moments Of Calm – Theatre Love and Bookshop Meanderings.

Last week was a good week in my little corner of West London.  The sun shone (some of the time), it’s been warm, it hasn’t rained and I’ve been back to the theatre.

Theatre

The last time I went to the Theatre was about a year ago.  It was The Riverside in Hammersmith and I was watching a play starring Robert Bathurst.  It was fabulous, but unfortunately someone in the audience was taken ill so we all had to vacate and then because of ‘you know what’ we never got back to see it again.

Thankfully my first theatre visit since then was somewhat calmer.  In the ground of St Pauls Church (otherwise known as the Actors Church) in Covent Garden, a theatre company is putting on outdoor performances  throughout August.  It was a beautiful warm evening when we were there to watch Arthur / Merlin.  A warm and fun play about Arthurs quest to become king.  Some great performances and a lovely place to watch theatre.  This is one of my favourite quiet London places tucked away in the heart of such a busy part of London.

Books, Books, Books

I may have bought a few books last week, all in the name of research you will understand.  There are few things which make me happier than a good old bookshop wander.  Bookshops are the calmest of places, filled with people lost in their search for words and stories.  For something I’m currently writing I needed to get out into the ‘field’ and do some very necessary first hand research.  This just happened to coincide with one of those perfect summer days in London. Warm and sunny but not stuffy, blue skies, and a smattering of clouds.  I wandered from Mayfair to Piccadilly taking in some of my favourite bookshops along the way, buying far more books than I intended.

With a bag full of books, I mooched down to Green Park to sit on the grass and enjoy my purchases and some people watching. Then along to Hyde Park Corner, under Wellington Arch, and into Hyde Park for a gentle walk to Knightsbridge to get the tube home.  A calm and pleasurable way to spend the afternoon, and just the inspiration I needed to be productive when I got home.

Is that Hatchards in the picture? I usually go to London for three weeks every spring but of course missed 2020 and 2021.. Cambridge USA isn’t a bad place to be stranded, but I miss my London friends and my favorite spots. Your blog puts me in touch with many of them, for which I thank you.

Yes it is. Hatchards is one of my favourite book shops in London. So pleased you enjoy visiting London via my blog. I do hope it’s not too long before you can visit again. Thank you so much for reading.
