Day 5 on our London advent calendar is GEO. F. Trumper
“Recognised as the finest traditional gentlemen’s barber in London and is known throughout the world for its matchless range of gentlemen’s fragrances and grooming products.” – Geo F Trumper
Enter GEO. F. Trumper on Curzon Street in London’s Mayfair and you instantly feel you have entered another age. Time seems to have stood still in this gentlemans hairdressers. The impeccably attired, courteous staff, the aromas of sandalwood, warm spice and musk, the array of beautifully stacked glass bottles, shaving brushes and creams, the mahogany shelving and polished glass cabinets. All of this make a visit here much more than any ordinary shopping experience.
This charming store was established by George Trumper in 1875 and still continues many of the traditions started then. Those having their hair or beard attended to will be led towards the back of the shop where curtained private cubicles await. All this adds to the luxury and of a gentleman’s hairdresser which has received royal warrants by all monarchs since Queen Victoria. The shop has also featured regularly in literature. In Ian Flemming’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, James Bond finds Eucris cologne in his bathroom. I don’t think Bertie Wooster ever visited here but I feel sure he too would have approved.
My husband wears cologne from Trumpers so a visit here features annually in my Christmas shopping. Even if he didn’t I would go simply to gaze in the lavish shop window. A visit to this genteel corner of London will always be on my Christmas to do list.
