The Weekend Wander #33 Snow Days are Reading Days

As a child I remember laying on the sofa one summer holiday completely engrossed in a book called ‘Cut off From Crumpets’.  It was about a family spending a holiday with grandparents.  It snowed heavily causing the family all kinds of unexpected events.  I  recall little else of the story but I do remember the cover of the book and I also vividly remember lifting my head from my book looking outside on to our garden which was bathed in sunshine and being surprised it wasn’t covered in snow.  Such was my complete engagement with this book I had (momentarily) lost touch with reality!  I must have given that book away years ago despite much searching I have never been able to find it since.

As snow and ice continue into the weekend here in the UK, I thought I would share with you some of my other favourite wintery reads, simply because when its cold outside, a good book and a cup of tea inside is hard to beat.

  • The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey – A beautiful tale about a snowman who becomes a child.
  • The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe by (Chronicles of Narnia) by CS Lewis – A magical land where its always winter by never Christmas
  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – The ultimate classic winter weepy
  • Terra Incognito by Sarah Wheeler – Tales of a winter spent in Antarctica

And finally….

As most of us are tucked up in warm houses with hot drinks on tap, all across our country people who have nowhere else to go will be sleeping rough and on the streets.

There is something you can do, if you see someone homeless sleeping rough outside call Streetlink On 03005000914 Tell them where and when you saw them. they will send a patrol vehicle to take them to a Emergency Shelter.
