Moments of Calm: Morning Runs and Lunchtime Reading

Well hello! I hope you have all had a lovely weekend and have been able to enjoy at least a bit of sunshine. It is gradually warming up, thankfully.  Much as I love my warm and furry winter coat, I’m more than ready to hang it up for another year.  I’m longing to wear spring jackets and dresses rather than jeans and jumpers.

Despite the chilly days, the mornings have been absolutely glorious.   Even in London where we don’t see frosts too often, we have had some early frosty mornings in the last couple of weeks.  Peeking out of the window to a see sparkly roof tops and shimmering grass has been quite a surprise.  This has made for some beautiful early morning runs.  Since I started working at home a couple of weeks ago, I have been able to go running before I start work most mornings.  Running in the early freshness of the day along the canals or through local parks has been a real treat.  Nature often looks at its finest in the early morning sunshine. I always loved my morning cycle commute and knew I would miss it.  Bed to breakfast to chair doesn’t really work for me. I feel better physically, and mentally calmer if I can start the day with a little va va voom!

Another joy of working at home has been lunchtime reading!  Although I always had a book in my bag when I was working at the hospital, it rarely ever made it out of my bag.  Lunchtimes were usually sat at my desk in front of my computer.  At home, I can eat my lunch and read, and then read a little bit more afterwards.  As the weather gets warmer I know I shall be taking my lunch and my book outside at the first opportunity.

I have recently read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Oh my what a book.  A coming of age story with a twist. This was fabulous and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I have also just read Spring Cannot Be Cancelled by Martin Hockney and David Hockney .  It is an account of the lockdown Hockney spent painting in Normandy.  It is based on conversations and correspondence between Martin and David and is full of his beautiful paintings.  It is a taster of the forthcoming Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy ‘The Arrival of Spring, Normandy 2020’.  I have my ticket booked and cannot wait for this.  Hockney exhibitions are always a complete feast for the eyes.

So my friends, I hope you have a beautiful week, filled with moments of gentle calm.

Angie xx
