Moments of Calm: New Every Morning

Every morn is the world made new.
You who are weary of sorrow and sinning,
Here is a beautiful hope for you,—
A hope for me and a hope for you

                                                                          – New Every Morning by Susan Coolidge

New Every Morning by Susan Coolidge is a beautiful poem and one which is new to me.  I discovered it at the beginning of the year and have come back to it most days since.  It has given me real comfort and encouragement as I have slowly dipped my toes into the waters of 2022.  I have found it a little hard to get going this year.  Plans and goals have been hard to grasp and  the first week of the year was unexpectedly sluggish.  The goals and plans I usually have at the beginning of a new year have been to slow form.

When I’ve been dissatisfied with my achievements, or if the day hadn’t been the day I had planned,   New Every Morning has reminded me it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow is a always a new one. Each day is a fresh start brimming with possibilities. Of course this isn’t new information, it’s just been particularly meaningful to me in the last couple of weeks.

Very often my mornings begin with a run.  At the moments those runs are in the half dark when the air is icy cold and the ground is hard.  It’s rarely easy to leave a warm bed and put on the trainers but this week my efforts have been rewarded with some of the most glorious sunrises.

Running through the parks where I live, watching the sky lighten and the sun slowly appear has been a joy, and another affirmation of the truth of Susan Coolidge’s poem  ‘Every morn is the world made new.’   ‘Here is a beautiful hope for you, A hope for me and a hope for you’.

I hope your start to the new year has been a gentle one too xx

If you don’t know this poem, then I recommend having at look at it you can find it in the Scottish Poetry Library.
