Day 16: Duke of York Square
The Duke of York Square in Chelsea is the former home to the Duke of York’s army barracks. When I was here earlier this week, as you will see from the photo there was still snow on the ground, which I feel only adds to the beauty of this open space.
This is a lovely place to come both summer and winter and is the ideal place for one of my favourite pastimes – people watching. On one side of the square is The Satchi Gallery. On the King’s road side is a collection of shops and restaurants with plenty of inside and outside space for watching the world go by. At the weekend there is a great artisan food market which definitely makes it worth a visit too.
There is no denying it can get busy, especially on a Saturday, but this green open space is traffic free and seems to bring a sense of calm that encourages you to stop for a while. There is always something or someone to watch here. The architecture is elegant and typical of this part of London and at Christmas the vast Christmas tree is a worthy photo stop.
