Day 21 Sherlock Holmes Museum
London has so many fabulous museums that it can be hard to know where to start if you are visiting the city for the first time. Mostly I suspect the temptation is to start with one of the big 3 in South Kensington or perhaps The British Museum. All great choices, but sometimes the many smaller museums tend to get forgotten. The Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker Street is one such smaller museum which it is always a delight to visit.
The museum is situated in a 4 storey town house at Sherlock’s legendary address, and recreates his home as if he was still living there. All the rooms are set out exactly as described in Conan Doyle famous stories with books, paintings and other paraphernalia displayed throughout. At Christmas I think it is especially delightful as garlands are festooned across the front of the house. The cosy gas lighting, and Victorian surroundings lend itself to Christmas past.
The gift shop is brimming with Sherlock themed treasures as well of course, all of Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels about the super sleuth. Great gift shopping opportunities for the Sherlock fan in your life.
Many people, myself included love to indulge in some Christmas crime reading. A visit to this museum will put you in the mood to settle down by the fire and do just that.
Angie, these have given me so much pleasure – thank you! At age 77, I still love opening the windows of an advent calendar, and this year I’ve had a really sweet one with drawings by Quentin Blake. I hope you enjoy your holidays and are not inconvenienced by all the strikes, etc.
