Day 22: Borough Market

Day 22 Borough Market

Another day, another door, and behind it another market. This one, Borough Market, seems especially appropriate to open the door of today, as I suspect many of you maybe shopping for food or beginning your own festive food preparation.

Like Leadenhall, Borough Market has been on London’s map for many centuries and goes back to Roman times. Although the market as it is today has been in its current location since 1756.  The market is large and spread beneath the arches of London Bridge station making it very easy to find and get to. This is especially helpful if you leave weighed down by large bags of shopping.

There are over 100 stalls selling fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat, olives, breads and pastries, chocolate and much, much  more. All of the stall holders are knowledgeable and passionate about their produce.  They love to talk about their products and clearly care about what they are selling.

At Christmas all this foodie goodness is turned up to another level as the market festooned in lights pulls out all the stops to ensure all your festive food requirements are met.  Stalks of crispy green sprouts and baskets of gently dimpled clementines have never looked so tempting.

The area around Borough Market is teeming with places to eat and drink but I would suggest buying something from one of the stalls along with a delicious coffee from Monmouth Coffee and heading towards the river to enjoy a picnic.

At weekends it is very busy so my number one tip is, if you can go during the week (wednesday to Friday), and go as soon as it opens. That way you get to peruse all the stalls in comfort and buy without the pressure of other shoppers breathing down your neck.
